Entering the Huntsman MHR program, I felt welcomed, included, and accepted. The diversity in my cohort helped me appreciate the diversity of background and the diversity of thought. In the program, I felt pushed to my very limits. It provided me with real, complex business situations that required me to think outside the box. The program is set up to facilitate student success and empower them to thrive in fast-paced global Fortune 500 environments. I applied those lessons and experiences in my graduate internship with a well-respected Fortune 100 company. It was clear that the MHR program provided me with the tools necessary to enter and thrive in a demanding and competitive corporate setting. The USU MHR students have the resources necessary for success, but it is up to the student to capitalize on these resources. As I progress in my HR career, I know what I achieve is entirely up to me, but I am secure that the program has given me a well-paved runway.

My early career experiences taught me the importance of professional confidence. I know that no matter what position you hold within an organization, having difficult conversations provides growth and learning for yourself and others. And being confident, standing your ground, and being willing to speak up in conversations with employees, managers or organization leaders can earn you and your ideas respect. Additionally, it is important for diverse voices to be heard. Not shying away from raising a counterpoint also encourages others to bring their voice to the conversation. Coming from an education and training background I entered the Huntsman School MHR program at times questioning my ability to raise a controversial point on business strategy. However, through the program I continued to build my confidence in raising tough counterpoints. I honed my data mining skills so that I would continue to speak from a data informed position. Mentors and previous managers had consistently reminded me that “it is hard to pick a fight with someone when their points are backed by data.” Additionally, I built out my understanding of best practices in strategic HR issues that play an important part in business success.

Through the Huntsman School MHR program, we have learned a great deal about the strategic side of HR, which when done correctly, can be one of the most transformative parts of a business for good. I have seen firsthand that the real HR work is done out and about with the employees, not behind a computer. The program has built my confidence in dealing with sticky and complex issues. I have developed a strong knowledge base and an understanding of important labor laws and policies. My career experiences have helped shape my ability to navigate these situations with requisite tact, skill, and respect for the individual. As both a bi-lingual bank teller and manufacturing HR rep I know that no matter what language someone speaks, everyone understands if you are showing them respect. Embracing diversity is an advantage, not a compliance requirement.
