Huntsman Scholar Program - FAQ

What is the Scholarship Amount?

Scholars receive $1,000 per semester for up to eight semesters totaling $8,000.

Can I participate in the program remotely?

No. The program is in-person on USU’s Logan Campus. Community and experience are core to the program, and we believe in-person interaction supports the strongest outcomes.

What extra requirements come with being a Huntsman Scholar?

The requirements can be found on the Scholar Journey page. It includes Scholar Priority sections of acumen courses, four labs including a global experience, professional mentorship, peer mentorship, and Scholar events.

How many Huntsman Scholars are there in total?

Currently there are 450+ Huntsman Scholars, but numbers may fluctuate slightly by semester. The Scholar Program is looking to grow in the future.

Are Huntsman Scholars evaluated regularly?

Yes. Scholars are evaluated each semester on academic performance and program engagement. If standards are not met, a student may be placed on probation (with a reduced stipend) for one semester.

Does applying early give me an advantage?

No. Applying early doesn’t help. We review all applications after the deadlines. Please ensure that both the written application AND Hirevue interview are submitted by the deadline.

What is the written application like?

The written application asks you to provide a detailed overview of your experiences and interests. You’ll be asked to list your extracurricular activities, work experiences, community service, leadership roles, and hobbies. This is your chance to showcase what makes you unique, highlight your accomplishments, and demonstrate how your experiences have prepared you to thrive as a Huntsman Scholar. Be specific and thoughtful, this is where you show what sets you apart.

What is the interview like?

We use a program called Hirevue. It is a video interview, and you will need a computer (or device) with a working camera and mic to record your responses to three questions. The system provides a practice question so you can feel more comfortable before recording. We highly recommend you use the practice question to ensure your microphone is working. The interview will take 20-30 minutes; you will have 1 minute to prepare for each question and 2 minutes to answer each question.

What kind of recommender should I choose?

We ask for 2 recommenders, one academic (like a teacher or professor) and one who can speak to your service or leadership (club advisor, employer, etc.). Make sure your recommenders know how meaningful this program is to you so their recommendation can be thoughtful and personal. If you are having trouble with your letters of recommendation reach out to leia.isaacson@usu.edu.

How competitive is the application process?

We typically receive 2 to 3 times as many applications as we have spots available.

Can I edit my application once I have submitted?

No. Once your application has been submitted, no edits can be made.

Can I defer my acceptance?

Yes. It is common for students to defer for up to 2 years either before they start or even once in the program for religious, military, internship, personal health, or study abroad reasons.

How do labs work?

There are 4 immersive labs based on the 4 pillars of the Huntsman School of Business (Leadership, Analytical Rigor, Global Vision, Entrepreneurial Spirit) that are a core part of the Scholar experience. Scholars will complete one lab per year.

What does the global experience look like?

The global experience is a fully funded international trip connected to the Global Vision lab. Destinations change every year. Students will get the opportunity to explore new cultures, businesses, and global markets.

When are the labs offered?

Labs are typically offered on Wednesday afternoons.

What can I expect out of each lab?

Each lab is immersive and designed to help you grow in a specific pillar:
  • Leadership Lab: Focuses on personal leadership development, personal brand, and team dynamics.
  • Analytical Rigor Lab: Builds critical thinking, data analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Global Vision Lab: Includes the international trip and prepares you to understand global business, cultural intelligence, and global mindset.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit Lab: Sparks creativity and innovation through real-world business challenges.

What is mentorship like in the program?

From the beginning, Scholars are paired with both a professional mentor and a peer mentor. These mentors support career development, goal setting, and professional growth.

Who are the professional mentors?

Professional mentors are industry professionals and Huntsman alumni who volunteer their time to support Scholars. They provide career advice, networking, and long-term mentorship. You can find a list of professional mentors here.

Who are the peer mentors?

Peer mentors are current Huntsman Scholars who are a year or two ahead in the program. They help incoming Scholars navigate labs, classes, events, opportunities, and anything else you may need.

What are the benefits of mentorship?

Mentorship can provide personalized career and academic guidance. We want you to feel supported during your time as a Huntsman Scholar and having someone to help you navigate big decisions is a major benefit.

Can I double major?

Yes! A good portion of our Huntsman Scholars dual major, often combining business with other fields like engineering, communication, or the sciences.

What about internships and job placement?

Internships are required for all Scholars, and many go on to intern multiple times. We also have a 100% job placement within 6 months for our Huntsman Scholars. They regularly land positions at competitive firms and top graduate schools.

What does probation look like?

Scholars who fall short of the program standards for academic or participation reasons, may be placed on probation for a semester. During this time, they will receive a 50% reduced stipend and must demonstrate they can meet the required standard in the following semester.

Can I take a leave of absence?

Yes. Many students take a LOA from the university for personal, health, religious, or academic reasons.

What are the benefits of completing an internship?

We require every Huntsman Scholar to complete an internship because real-world experience is one of the most valuable parts of your business education. An internship helps you apply what you’re learning in the classroom, explore different career paths, and build the skills employers look for.

What are the Scholar Events like?

Scholar events are a mix of community service, professional development, and forums. They’re fun, meaningful, and designed to help you build relationships and get the most out of the Scholar community.
