Curriculum

Degree Requirements

To complete either of the 2 MMIS programs (face-to-face or online), candidates must complete a total of 30 credits. Students can choose from the following options:

    1. Completing two of the five certificate tracks plus two capstone courses (6 credits)
    2. Create a 30-credit program customized to meet your interests and needs. Work with the academic advisor to make sure that all requirements for graduation are satisfied.

Course substitutions can be made within certificate tracks or among the 6 capstone credits if approved by the department. A given course cannot be used to complete more than one certificate, or both a certificate and a capstone credit requirement.

At least 15 credits of the 30 credits must be 6000 level courses.

Here are some important requirements and details to keep in mind:

  • At least 15 credits of the 30 credits must be 6000-level courses per USU Graduate School requirements.
  • Most advanced courses require skills in Python (DATA 3500) and Database (DATA 3330). Plan to take these courses first. If a student already took these (or equivalent) courses, they will be waived and can be substituted with other courses.
  • Students in the face-to-face program can take online courses. Face-to-face students should be aware that the tuition amount for online courses is different, see the Tuition Overview.
  • Course substitutions can be made within certificate tracks or among the 2 capstone courses (6 credits) with approval from the academic advisor.
  • A given course cannot be used to complete more than one certificate, or both a certificate and a capstone credit requirement. (i.e. no double-dipping)
  • Graduate Internship (IS 6250; 1, 2, or 3 credits) can be part of the required 30 program credits if and when a student has an internship in the general area of information systems or data analysis. Departmental / Graduate Director approval and supervision by the Internship Coordinator faculty member is required.
    • International students should check with USU’s Global Engagement office for applicable visa rules for Internships.
  • Independent Readings (IS 6950; 1, 2, or 3 credits) can be part of the required 30 program credits. Departmental / Graduate Director approval and supervision by a faculty member is required.
International students only:
  • Per our current understanding, US Government visa rules require a full course load (9 credits/semester). Of these 9 credits, 6 credits have to be face-to-face courses. Only credits above the 6 credits from face-to-face courses can be from online courses. For complete information please contact USU's office of Global Engagement.
