Informational Interviews:

An informational interview is an informal conversation you initiate, generally lasting 15-30 minutes, with a professional in your desired career path. Skillfully used, this is one of the most valuable sources to understand company values, position specifics, and building connections.

Informational Interview Quick Steps:

  1. Arrange the interview, remember to be courteous, and explain your objective fo gathering information
  2. Prepare specific questions before the interview
  3. Send a thank you email or handwritten note within 24 hours of your conversation

Arrange the Interview

  1. Identify Potential Interviewees: Select people in the industry or career you want to learn more about through inkedIn, the company website, or your network.
  2. Reach Out: Send a brief message expressing your interest in their career or industry and explain that you want to ask questions about their experience.
  3. Set a Date and Time: Once they have expressed interest in speaking with you, arrange a date and time, confirming a few days in advance to ensure timely communication.

Here are some key things you should include in a request for an informational interview via LinkedIn or email.

  • Introduction: Begin by introducing yourself and explaining why you're interested in the industry, company, or the role of the individual.
  • Reason for the Request: Clearly state that you are requesting an informational interview, and explain why you want to connect with them. For example, you may be interested in learning about their career path, the company culture, or how to break into the industry.
