Notre Dame professor joins the Huntsman School of Business as head of the Department of Management

An award-winning professor who launched the Gigot Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Notre Dame is now serving in a key leadership position at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.

James Davis has accepted an invitation to become a professor and the head of the Management Department at the Huntsman School. He launched the entrepreneurial center at Notre Dame in 1998, and in the 10 years he served as its director, it was consistently ranked among the top 20 programs in the country.

Before coming to USU, Dr. Davis was the John F. O’Shaughnessy Chair of Family Enterprises in 2006 and the Milan Siegfried Director of Entrepreneurial Studies in 2004. While at Notre Dame, the president of the university presented him with the “President’s Award,” recognizing him for his contributions to the university. He was also named as the "MBA Outstanding Professor of the Year" at Notre Dame three times.

In 2006, the Academy of Management, the leading professional association for professors of management, honored Dr. Davis for his research on trust, calling it the best theoretical, groundbreaking research of the 1990s.

Dr. Davis brings experience as a researcher, professor and entrepreneur to the Huntsman School, according to Dean Douglas D. Anderson.

“Jim’s record of scholarship is extensive and impressive,” Dean Anderson said. “He is an outstanding and highly energetic teacher. Here we teach our students to be innovative, and we emphasize the importance of ethical leadership. Dr. Davis is uniquely qualified to add momentum to those efforts and will clearly prove an important addition to the leadership team at the Huntsman School of Business.”

The appointment comes after the school did a nation-wide search to find the right person for the position, Dean Anderson said.

With research interests and publications in the areas of stewardship, strategic decision-making, trust, corporate governance and social capital, Dr. Davis’ articles have appeared in many publications, including the Strategic Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Harvard Business Review and International Journal of Value-Based Management.

“I came here to speak last January and was very impressed to see the progress going on at the Huntsman School of Business,” Dr. Davis said. “I could not pass up the opportunity to be a part of this school’s efforts at this crucial time. I think I can learn from the impressive leadership team it has in place and contribute to its focused efforts to better serve the students here at USU.”

Dr. Davis earned his undergraduate degree and M.Ed. from BYU, his MBA from Idaho State University and his doctorate in corporate strategy from the University of Iowa.

The Huntsman School is making great strides I am excited for the growth and the additions to the school. I'm looking forward to working with Dr. Davis as I'll be a part of the Masters of Science in Human Resources program this fall.
