Biography

Dr. Dwight Israelsen is Professor of Economics and Director Emeritus of China Cooperative Academic Programs in the Department of Economics and Finance.  Professor Israelsen earned a Bachelor’s degree in economics at USU, studied Slavic Languages at Harvard University, and earned his Ph.D. in economics at MIT.  In addition to his work at USU, he has taught at MIT, Harvard, BYU, and several universities in Russia and China.  While at USU, Dr. Israelsen has taught more than 40 different courses in the curriculum, and has developed 12 new courses.  He teaches economic principles, economic theory, econometrics, economic history, economic systems, and in other areas.  He has been Teacher of the Year 8 times in the Department of Economics and Finance and 4 times in the Huntsman School of Business, and he received USU’s Outstanding Teaching Award 4 times.  He was named Professor of the Year by the President’s Leadership Council and received their Hall of Fame Award.  Professor Israelsen’s research interests include demographic economics, incentives in economic organizations, economic systems, and the economic history of the U.S., Russia, and the American West.  His research has resulted in more than 100 publications in professional outlets, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Comparative Economics, Advances in Econometrics and others.  In addition, he has made more than 150 presentations at professional conferences.  His research has been recognized with 10 Best Paper Awards.  In addition to his teaching and research activities, Dr. Israelsen is Director of International Academic Initiatives in the Huntsman School of Business, and served as Director of China Cooperative Academic Programs for 10 years.
