Biography

Tyler attended Brigham Young University - Idaho where he received a bachelors degree in Business Management with a emphasis in Finance in 2008. Following graduation, with the financial world in chaos, Tyler went to Alaska to work as a bus driver and tour guide for the cruise ships. Following his adventures in the Great White North, Tyler started his HR career in Salt Lake City working for an educational management company that ran charter schools. After gaining a couple years of experience as the company's first HR person, Tyler attended Utah State University where he received a Masters of Science in Human Resources and an MBA. While at Utah State, he completed an HR internship with Honeywell in Richmond, Virginia. After graduating, he joined Honeywell's rotational Leadership Development Program, Pathways. While with Honeywell, he worked as an HR business partner at unionized and non-union chemical plants in Richmond, VA and Shreveport, LA, helping to prepare for negotiations at one site and working to address a union campaign at another. From there, he became a compensation and business development specialist in Columbia, MD where he worked closely with the front end of the business to bid on new government services contracts. Tyler then moved to Tempe, AZ to become an HR predictive analytics specialist. In this role, Tyler worked as an internal consultant to HR executives around the globe to understand their business problems and translate those into big data analyses that resulted in predictions and recommended actions for the business. Following that role, Tyler moved to Prague in the Czech Republic where he ran an HR operations center with responsibilities for all of Europe, Middle East, and Africa. HR was Tyler's product, but his focus was on cycle time, customer satisfaction, quality, and efficiency. Tyler then went back into an HRBP role in Mason, OH, joining a warehouse and distribution center automation business that Honeywell had acquired roughly a year prior. Leading a team of HRBP's, Tyler supported three business units totaling over $3 billion in revenue with over 1,300 employees. After 7 wonderful years at Honeywell, Tyler left to become an HR Director at L3Harris Technologies in Palm Bay, FL. In this role, Tyler is the HR leader over a global team of HRBP's that support a roughly $1 billion Intelligence and Cybersecurity business. With L3 and Harris having recently merged together to form a $20 billion aerospace and defense company, Tyler is focused on not only growing his business, but also integrating various business units across the globe to ensure that the 2,300 employees can help their customers' critical missions succeed through their products, programs, and services. Tyler and his wife, Melinda, have a beautiful baby boy, Carter (1 year old) and are expecting baby #2 in March 2021. They enjoy traveling, the beach, playing games, SCUBA diving, and binging Netflix. Tyler also enjoys playing, watching, and following sports, especially soccer.

Q: Why did you choose the Huntsman School Master of Human Resources Program?
A: With a business undergraduate degree that was focused on Finance, I have a passion for business and data, so I was looking for an MBA program that focused heavily on HR so I could be a business-first HR professional. After looking into various programs, I found out about the MBA/MHR dual degrees program at USU that offered me an education that had the breadth in business with the depth in HR.

Q: What was your favorite part of the Huntsman School MHR Program?
A: I loved how interactive and hands on my experience was at Utah State. The program had us working with real companies in Logan and Salt Lake City, helping them to improve their hiring processes, employee engagement, and their diversity and inclusion. Another student and I sought out a project and went to Jamaica to redesign the performance management process for their national oil company. These experiences helped take my learning out of the classroom and provide me real experiences that prepared me for my career. Also, the faculty really care about the students. I learned and grew so much while in Logan and thanks in large part because of the mentoring, coaching, and support I received from the MHR program. I would not be where I'm at today without the MHR program professors and faculty.

Q: What advice would you give current MHR students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in HR?
A: Remember that the function serves the business. Far too often HR gets in the way of the business rather than enabling the business. Seek out unique and challenging experiences. When you extend your comfort zone and take on projects that no one else wants, you become an expert at stuff no one else is and, even more importantly, you become comfortable with the uncomfortable. Diversified experiences help you stand out from the other candidates. Speak the language of the business, which is data. Remember the quote, "In God we trust, all others bring data." Lastly, combine the amazing learning you received at USU with a great work ethic. Employers want a white color education with a blue collar work ethic. Don't be afraid to jump in and get your hands dirty. Perfection is the enemy of progress, so get in there, iterate, and start moving toward the solution rather than talking about the solution.

Q: What are your 2-3 main job duties?
A: Enable business growth through strategic hiring
Ensure business continuity through retention and succession planning
Drive integration of international businesses
