Stephanie Hugie

Title: Economist

Company: United States Bureau of Labor Statistics

Location: Washington, D.C.

Educational Background:

M.S., Economics, Utah State University, 2011
B.A., Economics and International Studies, Utah State University, 2009

Stephanie's roots in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business are deep: her grandfather Dr. Reed R. Durtschi, emeritus professor of economics, taught at the School for nearly 40 years. In 2009 Stephanie received undergraduate degrees from both the School of Business and the College of HASS (currently known as CHASS), graduating as Valedictorian of the latter. She was also a Huntsman Scholar, and served as Vice President of Service in the program.

She interned for the Utah State Legislature, Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, and volunteered in Haiti before returning to Utah State to receive a Master's degree in economics. While completing her graduate studies, Stephanie was placed in Washington, D.C. with ACDI/VOCA, an international development non-profit, through the School of Business. Since graduation, Stephanie has since stayed in the nation's capital, and she currently works as an economist for the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. She assists in forecasting final demand for the Employment Projections Program, which produces long-term projections of occupational employment in the United States.

For Stephanie, the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business provided an outstanding education-and at a competitive cost. In particular, Stephanie notes the advantages of training closely with distinguished faculty members. She says, "Working one-on-one with mentors in the School of Business, I gained practical experience and developed market-demanded skills that enabled me to compete in the job market and hit the ground running in my work. In addition, opportunities to conduct research, teach, and lead rounded out a complete educational experience."

A native of Salt Lake City, Stephanie is a marathon runner, relishes a good political conversation, and enjoys the outdoors-even the measly hills of the East Coast.
