Thank You Notes and Emails
Follow up after an interview is crucial. It demonstrates that you have good manners when working with others. It is a great opportunity to remind the hiring committee of your qualifications and one last opportunity to express your enthusiasm for the job position. Follow up promptly, 24-48 hours after the interview. According to a CareerBuilder survey, 22% of employers are less likely to hire a candidate if they don’t send a thank-you note after the interview. Fifty-six percent said it shows that the candidate isn’t really serious about the position, and 86% said it shows a lack of follow-through.
A thank you email may be sent along with a handwritten thank you note. It is another great opportunity to remind the hiring manager about you, your qualifications, and to expound in certain topics that you touched upon during the interview. Keep it brief, one page.
After you have sent your follow-up thank you notes/email, it is a matter of waiting. Allow the hiring manager at least two weeks to get back to you, unless they indicated a longer process during the interview. If enough time has lapsed, you may reach out to the receptionist to find out where the organization is at in the process. You may also reach out via email to the hiring manager.
Sample Thank You Note/Email
Dear Mr. Roland,
I would like to express my gratitude for taking the time to meet with me and discuss the details
of the Financial Analyst internship. I came home more enthusiastic about the organization and
how I can use my skills in data mining to help the team meet its goals.
Once again, thank you for the opportunity to meet with you and the team. I look forward to
hearing from you soon, and hopefully joining the team.
