Career Management Competency

How do your personal goals and values fit in with x company? Where do you see yourself in five years? What is your personal brand? These are all questions related to career management. As you become more familiar with this competency, you can "identify and articulate your skills, strengths, knowledge, and experiences relevant to the position desired and career goals, and identify areas necessary for professional growth. You are able to navigate and explore job options, understand and take the steps necessary to pursue opportunities, and know how to self-advocate for opportunities in the workplace." Learn how to better understand and articulate these skills by completing a Career Management challenge or by articulating a significant past experience.

  • Create a personal elevator pitch and practice it with five different people
  • Conduct an informational interview with someone that holds a role you aspire to. Ask him/her about career management and specifically what decisions and experiences led him or her to where they are professionally.
  • Research two of your top companies. What does career management and movement to different departments/roles typically look like at this company?
  • Watch Career Prep Workshop video on Career Management (see below)

Once you have completed a challenge, submit your verification documentation.

The goal is to showcase your experience and skills in specific competency areas so select the verification form that is most relevant and helpful for you and the challenge/past experience you are articulating. You can use the following for verification: resume/cover Letter, elevator pitch, STAR interview response, or a reflection/summary.
