The Dark Knight and Prisoner's Dilemma

This video clip from Batman: The Dark Knight, gives an example of the economic game of strategy, Prisoner's Dilemma. The Joker gives two ships the ability to detonate a bomb located on the other. If they choose to blow up the other ship, they will go free. If neither choose to detonate the bombs within a certain time period, both ships will be blown up. In this extreme example, the concepts of game theory and dominant strategies can be illustrated.

Discussion Questions

  1. How does Prisoner's Dilemma help us to understand the balance between cooperations and competition in business?
  2. In Prisoner's Dilemma, how does pursuing personal interest affect the interest of the group/society/economy as a whole?
