Biography

Dr. Miles Spencer Kimball is a recipient of the Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Visiting Professorship at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. As a visiting scholar, Professor Kimball joins the Economics and Finance Department faculty at Utah State University. Dr. Kimball is currently serving as professor of economics and research professor of survey research at the University of Michigan. He holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Economics and Survey Research Center.

Professor Kimball has a consistent track record of publishing scholarly research in leading economics journals such as American Economic Review, Econometrica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Political Economics, International Economic Review, Journal of Money Credit and Banking, European Journal of Political Economy and many others. Dr. Kimball is also a TIAA-CREF fellow.

Dr. Kimball’s research and scholarly work has been recognized through multiple grants and funding sources including the National Science Foundation, National Institute on Aging, Social Security Administration, Osaka University, Princeton University, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and others. He was also awarded the Samuelson Prize Certificate of Excellence and the LS&A Excellence in Research Award.

Professor Kimball will teach a compressed, half-semester course to faculty and high-ability undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Economics and Finance. The topic of the course for the first year is behavioral economics. In the subsequent years, the topic will change to the economics of risk and business cycles. During his 2011 visit, Dr. Kimball will also deliver a public lecture on his area of specialization. This lecture would be at a level that is accessible to faculty and students across campus as well as other business and government leaders in the community.

Professor Kimball will also deliver a technical presentation aimed at faculty and high-ability students on recent advances made in his research in economics.

Dr. Kimball also has an international perspective and speaks Japanese, German, and his native English.
