“As guests, we sat in their classroom and looked around with great excitement. The anticipation and intrigue was reciprocated through their faces, eyes, and body language. It was obvious to us that they had waited our visit for several weeks now. Their faces read, we get to meet real American college students, and ours read, we get to meet real Chinese college students! The air of the crowded classroom in Shangri-la, China was full of conversations for the next hour and a half as we exchanged questions and learned more about each other, our differences, and our surprisingly many similarities. We were able to converse freely because each one of the nearly forty students we were visiting spoke fluent English; only one of us spoke Mandarin. As we ended the visit and made our way off the university campus, the piercing thought came to my mind, every student in America needs an experience like that; every one of them needs to study abroad.“ -Scott Payne (2008)
