Staff Member Represents Huntsman School at National Diversity Conference
Program promotes Diversity in Corporate America

A Jon M. Huntsman School of Business staff member was recently invited to attend a conference by an award-winning organization that aims to create diversity in management by encouraging more minorities to pursue doctorate degrees in business.

Joseph Banks, internship coordinator at the Huntsman School of Business, attended the annual PhD Project Conference, held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare, in Chicago, Nov. 16-18. The PhD Project conference selected Banks to attend and paid for his expenses.
The PhD Project was created in 1994 to address the under-representation of African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans in management by helping to diversify business school faculty, Joseph said. Having a diverse faculty encourages more minorities to pursue business degrees, increasing the pool of minority applicants for positions in today’s multicultural corporate environment, he said.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to attend this conference and represent the minority population at Utah State University and the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business,” Joseph said. “Furthering one’s education, regardless of ethnic background or race, is a key principle we teach here, and I’m pleased to be a part of it.”
Joseph, who is Hispanic-American, heard about the conference while attending another meeting, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs Conference in Anaheim, California. He said while he was there, he decided to apply.
When The PhD Project was created in 1994, there were less than 300 African-American, Hispanic-American, or Native American minority business professors with doctorate degrees in all U.S. business schools. Today there are more than 1,100 minority business professors, an increase of more than 250 percent. Nearly 400 minority students are now enrolled in doctoral programs, Joseph said.
The PhD Project was recognized as the “Outstanding Educational Institution of the Year” by the National Black MBA Association. It received the “Corporate Conscience Award” by the Council of Economic Priorities, and the “Brillante Award for Excellence” by the National Society of Hispanic MBAs.
