Huntsman Graduate is One of "13 Under 30"
By Connor Child
A recent graduate from the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business was recognized recently by a national news source as a rising star in the publishing industry.
Lance Brown, who graduated from Utah State University in 2010 with a degree in marketing, made FOLIO Magazine’s annual list of emerging leaders in the publishing industry. The list includes 13 people under the age of 30 who are “helping redefine the companies they work for.”
Mr. Brown started out as an intern for WTWH Media and was offered a full-time position after graduating. He is now the community manager for the Cleveland-based firm, a position that requires him to manage relationships between WTWH and its users. Management at WTWH nominated him for the award without him knowing they did so.
Mr. Brown is particularly involved with the company’s social media strategy. His company has grown 200 percent on Twitter, saw a growth of 5,000 percent on Facebook, and has doubled the size of its LinkedIn profiles since he became the community manager, according to FOLIO’s profile of him. Mr. Brown also manages 10 additional social media accounts for businesses that work with WTWH.
“I try to come up with the best social media strategies for businesses,” Mr. Brown said. “I have to do a lot of personal research to keep up on the social media industry. It’s constantly changing.”
Mr. Brown said he has learned social media skills by reading various blogs, books, and websites, and by starting up numerous social media accounts. Remaining focused and self-motivated is crucial, he said, because he has to do the research himself to develop effective strategies.
“One thing I really developed in the Huntsman School of Business were the skills to be able to find the resources I need to be able to learn,” Mr. Brown said. “It gave me the tools to know where to look for the right resources."
On its home website, WTWH Media describes itself as an innovative business-to-business media company with magazines, websites, and apps that serve design engineers and other related professionals. The company made the most recent Inc. 5000 list, which recognizes the 5,000 fastest growing privately-held companies in the U.S.
Mr. Brown said he thoroughly enjoys working for WTWH Media, and he doesn’t see himself leaving any time soon. He is quick to acknowledge the support he receives from his co-workers, and he said he admires those who lead the company.
