Huntsman School of Business jumps into Facebook and Twitter

The Huntsman School of Business can now start collecting fans and Tweeting for all who care to listen.

Such language will probably seem strange to some, but those in the Facebook and Twitter worlds will know they now have a new way to learn the latest news and connect with the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.

Recognizing the widespread use and value of social networks, The Huntsman School of Business has launched a Facebook site to better connect with alumni, friends, and students. While the site is just beginning to grow, evolve and attract fans, it will soon include a collection of pictures, videos, and school news that will offer people a new way to see, hear, and read about what’s happening at USU.

The use of Facebook by adults grew from 8 percent in 2005 to 35 percent in 2008, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. From a business perspective, Facebook has become an effective tool to stay connected with customers and partners. According to a recent study by interactive marketing agency Rosetta, 59 percent of the top 100 retailers are now using Facebook. Facebook is not just for the young but has been attracting more and more baby boomers as they discover how Facebook helps them reconnect with old friends and share news.

Existing Facebook members can discover the school’s page by searching for the “Huntsman School of Business,” by clicking here or on the Facebook button at the end of the story. Those who are not on Facebook may be interested to discover how easy it is to become a member. All it takes is a name, e-mail address, and password, once you get to the Web site at http://www.facebook.com.

Those who join Facebook control how much information they post on their page and exactly who gets to see that information. Most people discover that once they explore the site, that it is not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

Now when it comes to Twitter…

Even Twitter recognizes that people initially think a suggestion to go tweet is foolishness.

On its Web-page it posts a quote from a customer who writes, “If you aren’t familiar with Twitter, it is one of those things, like MySpace, that sounds totally ridiculous and stupid when you first hear about it. But once you start using it, you realize how much fun it is.”

It’s also proven an effective way to get out news fast to a select group of people who have decided to “follow” you. The Huntsman School of Business has entered the Twitter world and has been sending out 140-word updates that are called “tweets” to all who choose to follow it.

News in the Twitter world is fast, concise and personal. You can opt to follow a favorite celebrity or your best friend who has moved to Ohio. President Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain are both on Twitter. All it takes is a search to find out if your favorite celebrity or best friend is one of the millions of people on Twitter.

Getting started is as easy as going to http://twitter.com/ where people can not only create a Twitter account, but can watch video tutorials to learn the basics of the Twitter world. Instructions are almost unnecessary because it’s a very simple interface that is very intuitive. You type your message in a box and do searches to find friends or others you want to follow.

Once on Twitter, if you discover someone you don’t know has decided to follow you, with a click of the mouse you can block them from getting your updates. You can also opt to let no one follow your updates unless you first grant them the privilege of becoming a follower.

Once you have an account, just do a search for “Huntsman_School” (don’t forget the underscore) and opt to become a follower. We’ll be paying attention on our end and will probably opt to follow many of our students, alumni and friends to see what they are up to.

Many can only look back with fondness on their days at the Huntsman School of Business, but with Facebook and Twitter, it’s like walking the halls again. We expect is just a matter of time before we hear the tweets of student, friends and alumni that have all become official fans of the Huntsman School of Business.
