Rebecca Smith is USU valedictorian
The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business valedictorian in fall 2007 was selected to give the student commencement address, and she took advantage of the opportunity to challenge her peers to be an "influence for good."
Rebecca Smith graduated from the Huntsman School of Business with a degree in finance and a minor in economics. Smith was selected to speak by a committee made up of other valedictorians from each of the colleges.
"Let us set a standard as an Aggie and as a graduate from Utah State University that sets us apart from the crowd, not just with the knowledge we have acquired, but by leaving our influence for good everywhere we go," she said at the event.
Of the nearly 2,000 students who graduated from USU last December, more than 200 of them were from the Huntsman School of Business.
Smith recently got a job at Sparrow & Kunz, LLC, an accounting firm in North Logan. She said that excelling academically required hard work, dedication and late nights. She said she was prepared for life after graduation.
"There are some fundamental skills I have learned at Utah State such as debits and credits and professional writing skills that have prepared me for the workplace," she said. "However, my education prepared me best by teaching me how to work with people in group settings, communicate with teachers and take the time to really research and understand something that may be confusing. Group skills and people skills are essential in the workplace."
