Strategic Vision

The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business understands that to effectively serve its students it must focus on the areas that will best prepare them for life after graduation.

In the words of our namesake benefactor, Jon M. Huntsman, “(Huntsman Students) should be able to compete with the brightest and best, produced anywhere in the world. They should enter the marketplace extremely well-equipped and well-trained with the best possible academic qualifications to compete with any institution of higher-learning in the world.” We share his vision, and we are focusing our efforts into four key areas to see it realized.

The Huntsman School of Business builds on our students’ ethical instincts to make them strong leaders. Jon M. Huntsman said, “Truly the (Huntsman) School of Business on this beautiful and unique campus should strive to teach not only the latest, state-of-the-art business practices, but the inculcation of ethics in all of its forms to ensure that each graduate is a man or woman of unquestioned integrity.”

Our students often come to us with a strong moral ethic and considerable leadership experience. We offer them the opportunities they need to build on those strengths so that they will be prepared to be the exemplary ethical leaders we so desperately need in the world today. Our students are taught that adhering to high standards will lead to success in the workplace. Recently, the Huntsman students formed a new club called the Society for the Advancement in Ethical Leadership that brings students and faculty together to explore, discuss and promote high business ethics.

We leverage our students’ international experiences by offering them additional business and service opportunities in our global marketplace. A 2008 internal survey revealed that nearly 70 percent of our students speak more than one language. In the same survey, nearly 40 percent of the students reported they had lived outside their home country for a significant period of time.

Through the Huntsman Scholar Program, our graduate programs as well as the Huntsman Study Abroad offers many students the opportunity to travel to locations in Europe, Asia and South America where they meet with business, academic and civic leaders and learn first-hand the keys to success in our global marketplace. Many opt to serve internships outside of the United States that lead them to rewarding international careers. And many students and faculty are able to interact with the companies and organizations around the world who work with our Field Studies program as they help them find solutions to their most perplexing challenges.

Encourage innovative thinking and spark entrepreneurial instincts. We often find our students start implementing what they are learning well before their graduation date. In a 2008 survey, more than 13 percent of students said they either owned or had owned their own businesses. Many learn to identify and analyze a need and then fill that need with a business of their own creation. The Huntsman students also have access to professionals, successful entrepreneurs from multiple industries, who continue to fuel the students’ entrepreneurial desires. Each year, the students plan and host e-Week where students meet with successful entrepreneurs, develop strong networking experiences and can even compete to win cash rewards for their new business ideas. A recent exit survey of Huntsman students showed that 28 percent plan to start a business of their own within the next ten years.

At the Huntsman School of Business innovative thinking is becoming the norm and entrepreneurship is celebrated. The school hired the former CEO of Prolexys Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Dave Clark, to be its new executive director of entrepreneurship programs. We teach students that entrepreneurs can be found in small start-up companies and in large corporations. The demand is always there for self-starters who find creative solutions that produce results in today’s competitive marketplace.

We help them develop the analytical skills required to gain a competitive edge in today’s workplace. Whether our graduates are guiding their own business through uncharted territory or are hired by an organization to gain a competitive edge, our students possess the skills needed to make effective decisions. They’ll know how to find the right data, analyze it and apply the results strategically.

Huntsman students took first place in eight events at a state leadership conference that tested business skills in a variety of areas in 2009.

Huntsman students have the skills they need to make strategic moves, the ethical foundation to make right decisions and the entrepreneurial instincts they’ll need to succeed in today’s rapidly changing global economy.
