Students

The Field Studies class is a three-credit class (MGT 6960) under the direction of a faculty expert that teaches students how to act as consultants for real companies. This is not a practice class. It is real world consulting. You will be required to provide high level consulting results that make a significant positive impact on your customer’s business. The Field Studies class offers opportunities to enhance and apply the skills you have acquired in school, meet industry leaders and strengthen your resume. There is flexibility in the particular clients that we include in the program; so Field Studies can arrange for projects that will be able to help further your career. Please contact Mark Thomas, director of Field Studies, to find a project that will be beneficial to you.

The Field Studies class is required for MBA students and can be taken as an elective or for internship credit by undergraduates. The Field Studies program works closely with the Huntsman Scholars program to select undergraduate students who would contribute to and benefit from participation in this consulting experience.

We are looking for motivated students with a variety of skills to contribute to the overall success of each consulting project. Students are divided into teams and assigned to work with a particular client to solve their consulting needs through detailed research and analysis. The deliverables are typically a PowerPoint presentation and a bound written summary of the team’s recommendations. It is different from other classes in the fact that the final grade is based on how useful the research and end product is for the company. Students are expected to provide excellent, useful work that solves the client’s problem.

Student Testimonial

“The Field Studies program added relevance to our educational experience at the Huntsman School of Business. I feel much more confident that I will be able to enter the workplace and do an excellent job from day one.”
