GO GLOBAL
"As you move through the company and you're looked at for a promotion, one of the things we're going to look at is, do you have international experience?"
- Susan Bishop, Spokeswoman for General Electric, quoted in "Seeking Business Leaders, U.S. Companies Think Gobally," New York Times, 12 December 2007.
Summer Study Abroad Programs
Travel to South America or Asia Summer 2009
Learn about global business, do a service project and get credit for required business classes
How are you preparing yourself to compete in the global marketplace? Jumpstart your career by participating in one of the Huntsman School's 2009 Summer Study Abroad Programs in South America or Asia. Each program lasts eight weeks: three weeks on campus and five weeks traveling (South America: Chile, Brazil, Peru / Asia: South Korea, China, Vietnam). During your travels you will visit businesses, government offices, and international organizations. You will gain insights into the dynamics and realities of the global marketplace and learn how decision makers keep their organizations competitive in a constantly changing environment. Your participation will be an important part of your education as you prepare to enter a global business environment. You will also have an opportunity to serve others during the program. The service project will bring great meaning and substance to your understanding of different cultures and peoples as you learn to value and appreciate others from a different country.
There are also scholarships available (two $2,000 scholarships for each program). The scholarships are primarily need-based although we do want to know about your academic background as well as your service and leadership activities.
One of the advantages of participating in a summer study abroad program is the opportunity to take required business courses within a global context. Talk to your advisor about the courses you can take. You can take up to 13 credits from among the following courses*:
- BA 3500: Fundamentals of Marketing (3 credits)
- BA 3700: Operations Management (3 credits)
- BUS 3250: Discussions with Business Leaders (1 credit)
- ECON 3400: International Economics (3 credits)
- MHR 3110: Managing Organizations and People (3 credits)
- MIS 2200: Business Communications (3 credits)
- Science depth course (3 credits) (Note: All participating students will be required to take this course so we can help you learn more about how science-based issues impact business practices.)
*Note: All course prerequisites must be met before enrollment in program courses. Meet with your advisor to learn which courses you can take.
If you are interested in getting a business minor, one of our programs can help you meet several of your requirements. Get more information from your advisor.
