The focus of the management information systems (MIS) degree is to provide education for and about business with an emphasis on management information systems. In addition to the bachelor’s degree in MIS, the department also offers master’s and Ph.D. degree programs. The bachelor’s degree programs in MIS (with emphases in management information systems, electronic commerce, and training and development). The world of information systems has a multitude of career options to offer. MIS is a social science that primarily focuses on the role that computers play in human settings, either individual or organizational.
Students graduating with a degree in MIS are prepared for careers in analysis and design of information systems and knowledge of application software to develop business solutions, including data management, e-commerce, communications and office automation. The number of reasons for majoring in MIS at USU is as large and varied as the number of individuals who have chosen to do so. People who become experts in the MIS area are qualified for a large and growing number of prestigious, well-paid jobs with excellent long-term career potential world-wide. Recent graduates are employed as webmasters, e-commerce systems developers, application software coaches, business systems analysts, business function software support specialists, database applications programmers, information systems security managers, database administrators, computer system development project managers, data analysts, business systems integrators, local area network administrators, and a variety of other related positions.
Completing degree requirements is necessarry to prepare for a job in the MIS field. A relevant internship is also highly recommended in order to gain practical knowledge of computer systems in an actual business setting. The internship counselors are located in the CEO Center, Business 309 of the George S. Eccles Business building assists students in internship placements.
